Buyer's guide

Choosing engine oil for heavy-duty trucks in Ethiopia

The right oil protects an engine that costs far more than the oil. This guide explains the labels on a drum of heavy-duty engine oil, when you need gas engine oil instead, how to choose grease, and how to avoid fake products.

Short answer

Use the viscosity grade and performance level in your engine manual. For many heavy-duty diesel engines that is SAE 15W-40 at API CI-4. Natural gas engines need gas engine oil. Truck wheel bearings usually take an NLGI 2 or NLGI 3 lithium grease with extreme-pressure (EP) additives.

Start with your engine manual

Your engine manual lists two things: a viscosity grade, such as SAE 15W-40, and a performance level, such as API CI-4. Buy an oil that meets both. If the manual is lost, the engine plate tells you the engine model, and the engine maker's recommendation for that model applies. Many Chinese trucks, including many Shacman and Sinotruk models, have Weichai engines, with model numbers such as WP10, WP12 or WP13. Send us a photo of the plate and we will help you check.

What SAE 15W-40 means

SAE 15W-40 is a multigrade oil. The number with the W (for winter) describes how easily the oil flows at a cold start. The second number describes how thick it stays at full operating temperature. A 15W-40 oil starts easily on a cool highland morning and still protects a hot engine on a long climb or a lowland route.

What API CI-4 means

API service categories for diesel engine oil start with C. API CI-4 was introduced in 2002 for heavy-duty diesel engines built to lower emission limits. An oil that meets CI-4 also covers the older CH-4, CG-4 and CF-4 levels, so it can go into engines that call for those. Newer engines may call for a later level, such as CK-4. Use the level in your manual, or a later one that the engine maker approves.

Diesel engine oil or natural gas engine oil?

Natural gas engines, including CNG and LNG trucks, buses and gas generator sets, run hotter than diesel engines and are sensitive to ash deposits from the oil. They need an oil made for gas engines. Don't put diesel engine oil in a gas engine, or gas engine oil in a diesel engine, unless the engine maker allows it. Our guide to engine oil for LNG and CNG trucks goes into more detail.

Choosing grease

Grease is graded by firmness on the NLGI scale. NLGI 2 is the most common general-purpose grade. NLGI 3 is firmer and stays in place better in hot, fast-turning parts such as wheel bearings. Lithium-soap greases are the usual choice for vehicles, and EP additives help protect parts under heavy and shock loads, which suits trucks on rough roads. Use the grade your manual calls for, and don't mix grease types in the same bearing.

Ethiopian conditions call for care

Dust, heavy loads, long climbs and heat all shorten oil life. If your trucks run on unpaved roads, carry heavy loads or idle for long periods, use the shorter end of the oil change interval in your manual, and keep air filters clean so dust doesn't reach the oil. Where oil analysis is available, it shows when the oil is really worn out.

How to avoid fake oil

Fake and refilled engine oil is a known problem across East Africa, and it damages engines quickly: it breaks down in the heat, lets parts wear and leaves sludge, which leads to overheating, worn bearings and seized engines. Our founders saw trucks and machines damaged this way while running trucks at Garri Logistics.

  • Buy from an authorized distributor, or from a reseller who buys from one.
  • Check that seals and caps are intact, and that labels are printed on the pack, not stuck on.
  • Check that a batch number or production date is printed on the pack.
  • Be careful with prices far below the market.
  • Keep your invoice, so you can trace what you bought.

Storing drums and pails

  • Store under cover, out of sun and rain, and off the ground.
  • If drums lie on their side, turn them so both bungs sit at 3 and 9 o'clock, below the oil level.
  • Keep packs closed until you use them, and use clean pumps and containers.
  • Use older stock first.
  • Keep different oils apart and labelled.
